Celebrating the International Day of Older Persons

Today we're talking a lot about the International Day of Older Persons.

Why is this important? Firstly, population ageing is an irreversible global trend. In 2021, 1 in 10 people worldwide were aged 65 or above. In 2050, this age group is projected to account for 1 in 6 people globally. This international campaign seeks to change the way age is viewed globally and to strengthen solidarity among generations and intergenerational partnerships.

“A longer life brings with it opportunities, not only for older people and their families, but also for societies as a whole. Additional years provide the chance to pursue new activities such as further education, a new career or pursuing a long neglected passion. Older people also contribute in many ways to their families and communities” - The United Nations.

As an ethical organisation that looks after independent living retirement communities across the country, we are committed to championing older people and recognising the value they add to society and their communities. We take great pride in the fact that many of our residents are active in their communities participating in local allotment groups, fitness/mobility classes, arts & crafts and other social events.

One of our estates recently took on a large gardening project to improve one of its public gardens. Another formed a conservation trust, set up with the aim of making their 4-acre site more valuable for wildlife and creating a peaceful space.

The 1st October also marks Silver Sunday…

Originally launched as a local campaign to tackle loneliness and isolation, it is now a national day where people of all generations can come together by hosting fun and free activities for older people. It is a day where older people can meet new people, visit new places, try new activities and connect with their local communities.

In 2021, there were more than 750 events across the UK with tens of thousands older people participating in events as varied as walking football, art classes, tea parties, dances, tai chi, boat rides and cultural experiences.

The events calendar for 2023 has nearly 400 free or low cost events and activities taking place across the UK, and it is a great opportunity to try something new, and meet new people.

A few we spotted included:

  • Over 40 free or low cost events in Kent including free dance classes, walking groups, games clubs and much more.

  • More than 100 events across Salisbury, Amesbury, Downton and Wilton, Wiltshire

You can find the events calendar on the Silver Sunday Website: https://silversunday.org.uk/calendar/

We hope many of our leaseholders and older people across the UK will be able to find something local to take part in this weekend, and connect with the communities and generations around them.
